The real disappointment comes into play when connecting the two units together to play the same video. The fact that the product uses analog connectivity and only comes with a 3 foot long AV cable is its downfall. Now, don't get me wrong, this may work out fine for you if you plan on attaching the screens on side by side headrests in the same row. But if you have a vehicle (such as a van), where there is the possiblity of someone tripping on this cable or, as in my particular install, you would like to have one screen in the middle row and the other in the rear row, then this is not even possible with this cable. The second and even more disppointing aspect of connecting the units is a result of this product relying on an analog connection. Because it is analog (and not digital), you will also need to accept picture degradation from the unit playing the DVD and second unit. While the picture quality isn't horrible, the picture quality difference between the player unit and receiver unit IS noticible (even with the 3 foot cable). And as you would imagine (with any analog connection), the longer the distance you send an analog signal the more the quality degrades. A puzzling decision, and a sad one for the buying public who now have very few choices that aren't either very expensive or compromised in audio quality. ** I purchased my first Squeezebox Touch directly from Logitech, and have enjoyed it enough over the first few days of ownership to write a quick review. To understand where I'm coming from, it may help to know I enjoy classical music, especially when its reproduced by a traditional stereo system with high quality discrete components. I own a British designed and built integrated amplifier and some tall floor-standing speakers from a Canadian manufacturer. Sound quality matters a whole lot to my enjoyment of music, and that shows in the care with which I select the components in my audio system. I have owned a number of Logitech's previous Squeezebox WiFi streamers, including the Squeezebox Classic and some Duet receivers, so I am not new to the Squeezebox ecosystem. I keep my music collection as a large library of FLAC-encoded files, so as to avoid any potential losses due to codec compression artifacts. On receiving my new Squeezebox Touch, I swapped out an existing "Slimdevices" branded classic Squeezebox in my main HiFi system for the new device. The Squeezebox Touch first discovered MySqueezebox.com as its source of music and asked me to provide login credentials, which caused it to upgrade its firmware from that site. After that, it rebooted and was able to connect to my local Squeezebox Server that I have running to serve music around the house. After that, I was able to browse my music collection and navigate to internet radio stations either using the touch interface or by using the supplied remote control. I noticed that the interface automatically uses bigger fonts if you are controlling it from the IR remote and smaller ones if it finds you are controlling it via the touchscreen, which obviously makes sense when you are within an arm's length of the display. As a first test, I played back a 96kHz, 24-bit high resolution copy of Marianne Thorsen on violin with the TrondheimSolistene playing Mozart's D-major Violin Concerto. At first I played the tracks via a Benchmark DAC1, which is a studio-quality monitoring DAC for use by mixing engineers. The sound was detailed, rich with a deep stereo image and musically involving. Next, I removed the Benchmark DAC from the signal path and tried again. Once again the sound was clearly better than a CD could provide and very close to that rendered through the Benchmark DAC. There has clearly been an improvement to the quality of the analog stereo outputs compared to previous Squeezebox versions, which was already pretty good. I then went on to listen to Emanuel Ax, Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma playing some Mendelssohn Piano Trios. This recording was "only" in 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality audio, nevertheless I was soon captivated by the musicality of the performance, and could find no significant short comings of the quality as rendered by the built-in DACs compared to the external, studio quality Benchmark DAC1. Someone starting to use this system without prior experience of Squeezebox Servers or software might face something of a learning curve to begin with. I can't speak to that, but I appreciate that I was able to drop this new device into an existing system and, within a few minutes, start to enjoy some very high quality reproduction of my music library. The advantages over the previous Squeezebox Classic are: * Color, touch-controlled user interface and display * Ability to play back high resolution music without loss of quality * Excellent audio quality from the analog outputs; significantly better than previous versions. Another possible advantage is to use the Squeezebox Touch as a music server as well as a client, by attaching a USB hard drive to the supplied USB port. I have not tested this functionality, so I can't comment on how well it works. This review was mainly focussed on sound quality. Based on my short experience, I recommend this device highly. There is a quick modification that can restore this device to the advertised range. Modification Instructions (you'll need a small flat head screwdriver and a hot glue gun): Pop the top off of it with the screwdriver starting at the ports. Pull out the circuit board and you'll see a large piece of metal. This metal is entirely unnecessary and serves only to satisfy customers who innately feel that heavier is more valuable. The piece of metal is held in place with double sided tape, so just pop it out. Put the circuit board back in place (it should sort of snap in). Put hot glue around the edge of the enclosure and put the top back in place. Now this device conforms to all the specifications that Belkin specifies. I hope this helps everyone out! I have been searching for an aux cable for my car that would fit my iphone with its case on. Well, after trying many cheap and expensive cables, I have found the "one". This Mediabridge cable is not your usual wimpy thin cable you would find for $1 that stops working correctly after a few months, nor is it an expensive one with ends so thick it won't fit in my iphone, it is made very well and its plugs are "stepped" so it is sleek enough to fit in anything with a case on. I am very impressed, and its not easy to impress me. The cable is thick and solid, seems very sturdy and you can't beat it for the price. Pros: - Overall build quality has improved, but especially with the clip mechanism. - Files on MicroSD integrate seemlessly with the on board memory. - The volume and power buttons have more ergonomic placement on the device. - Sound quality remains great. - Audiobook files can be sped up slightly to save some "reading" time. - The interface is a little smoother and nicer to move through. - The square trackpad makes it easier to navigate without looking at the player. (good for runners) Cons: - No cap on the MicroSD slot, so that could potentially get dirty. If you don't need gimmicks such as touch screens and web browsers, then this player is quite possibly the best on the market for value, size, and quality. The Clip+ is definitely worth the few extra bucks over what the first gen clip is selling for now. UPDATE: Having used the product for a while the one thing I'm disappointed with is battery life. The meter drains down to 50% at the expected pace, and then goes from 50% to 0 quite fast. I have many MP3 capable products and reasons why I am very fond of this little one for my new found effort. I have the following list of products and have tried my: Nexus S (too big and heavy for running, no physical buttons) iPod touch 4th Gen (Big, expensive at the storage size i wanted and no buttons for music controls) iPod Nano 4thGen (little, has a clip, but why the hell can't they include buttons?) iPod shuffle (not enough storage and I don't want to mix in my metal songs from lifting weights into my up beat running songs...) Likes: The clip Zip sounds great, is very small, has a clip and has physical buttons. It fits every need i want. The bonus is the MicroSD slot, I can not stress this enough. Skip the 8GB version and get the 4GB and pair it with a 16 or 32GB card. Bam 20-36GB of storage, insanely small and still clocks in under $100. FLAC support. Low rez color screen does what it needs to. Won't knock people over but tells you whats playing with album art. As for the other areas, the stop watch works like a stop watch...It keeps time and does splits. Not a huge thing and if you are using a polar watch or at a gym, the machine you are on will do just as well and be more convenient. In a pinch it works. The FM radio works fine. I live in a rural area, so my station choices are limited. From my experience, it works just fine if you are in an area with good recption. Dislikes: *UPDATE* MM works on updated firmware...still broken on stock firmware. Drag and drop also works, so you have that going for you. General gripe: The included headphones are perfect for giving to people you hate. You can use them, i guess, if you want to torture yourself, but like any MP3 player, Apple or otherwise, get some better phones...your ears and your music will appreciate it. Considering you would need to pay twice as much for an iPod with fewer features, no physical buttons and no storage expansion, just to run in a hampster wheel, save your scratch and get this guy. You will be glad you did, as it looks good, sounds good and does a it in a small package that just screams to be used in your fitness routine. It is surprisingly light and slim, especially considering the fullness, crispness, and volume of the sound that it produces. I have not been disappointed, particularly at this price point. Features that I really like: 1. Dual voltage, which is great for overseas travel. 2. Comes with power adapter. 3. AUX-IN capability has been very useful for plugging in to my laptop for movies. 4. They did away with the iPod inserts, and the design ingeniously allows whatever iPod you insert to rest against a back stop, so that you aren't stressing the connector when you push on the iPod to control it. 5. Remote is simple on features but works very well even when not pointed directly at the unit. Features that could still be improved: 1. The carry case is more like a dust cover. It is made from the same material those re-usable grocery bags are made from. I am not complaining that it doesn't come with something more substantial at this price, but I do hope that Logitech or some other manufacturer makes something with padding for those of us who travel a lot. I'd be happy to purchase it as an accessory. 2. The AC adapter would be even better if the prongs folded in, as many travel adapters do. 3. You can't use an iPod touch that has a case on it. The docking area narrows toward the bottom making the width a problem--even with slim fitting cases. This just means you have to have a case that comes off easily or one that has a detachable bottom. Overall I give this a 5 star rating. I waited about a month and a half for this to be released based on initial industry industry reviews (CNET, etc.) and features; I am not disappointed. The sound is great. It is portable. It looks good. It is not extremely expensive. Those all add up to a real winner. I own a Bose Sound Dock (original) and feel that the sound is better on that speaker system--fuller bass and it fills the room a bit better, however the price was double and it is not portable.
